Ride the trolley and discover La Crosse's historic downtown, beautiful riverfront, scenic parks and breathtaking overlooks.
The La Crosse area is often called "God's Country" because of its towering bluffs, its location on the banks of the Mississippi River, and its picturesque beauty. In the heart of the city is the Historic Downtown District. This district is listed on State and National Historic Registers. Of the 110 buildings in this district, 96 were built between 1866 and 1940, making it one of the largest commercial historic districts in Wisconsin.
La Crosse's history begain in Riverside Park in 1841, when 18-year-old Nathan Myrick left New York and settled in La Crosse. He established a fur-trading post on Barron's Island (now called Pettibone), and by 1842, he had moved the operation to the current corner of Front and State Streets. Soon steamboats navigating the Mississippi began stopping at his post.
The City of La Crosse welcomes you and hopes you enjoy your visit as you step back in time and enjoy God's Country!
